Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Review | Louise Trotter Lets the Light In

Inside Bottega Veneta Spring 2027

– How lighter craft brought spring to Bottega Veneta

It was the most elegant show of this Milan season. It was also the most spring-like.

Both sentences say the same thing. In Louise Trotter’s third Bottega Veneta collection, the elegance came from taking weight out of the clothes. The long coats, the big bags and the full skirts are all still there. The wearer simply looks lighter. These clothes took enormous work to make, but she no longer seems to be carrying the weight of the looks that came before.

The opening beige coat set the tone. The shoulders and body are cleanly resolved, and white lace sits at the neck. Lower down, though, the line of the coat slips off at an angle. One side of the hem rises, revealing more of the white layer underneath, and a long camel woven tote falls beside it. She’s well dressed, but she doesn’t look as if she dressed carefully.

I liked that small misalignment. Instead of keeping a neat coat neat to the very end, it lets in something of the person moving around inside it. Spring ease doesn’t come only from short sleeves or lighter fabric.

In a studio conversation with Vogue days before the show, Trotter explained that she’d been watching how we move between seasons. In winter, clothes protect the body. Heading into spring and summer, we take them off, bit by bit. What she wanted to capture was the state in between, and the word she used for that shift was “de-robing.”

The show began with coats and ended with dresses. In between, the materials opened up, skin appeared and color came in. The sense of a season shedding layers one at a time carried the whole show. It felt less like building a separate wardrobe for a summer holiday and more like watching everyday clothes adjust to the weather.

That suits Bottega better. Spring can arrive without taking off the city jacket.

Season Context | From Weight to Lightness

The change is clearest against the two collections before it. Trotter pulled Bottega’s craft and rich materials forward with real conviction, but she also drew criticism that all that technique and volume weighed the clothes down. Vogue observed that the atelier’s abundance had a way of pressing down on the womenswear in particular. WWD also mentioned the heft of her first two collections, and The Impression looked back at the heavy layering of her first spring outing.

This season is a clear answer. Lighter fabrics and color, along with lace and crochet drawn from the Venice region, let the tension out of the clothes. In post-show remarks reported by WWD, Trotter said craft is the house’s logo, and that she’d worked hard to find techniques that bring lightness and wearability while keeping the handwork.

A house that treats craft as its logo can’t simply strip out the handwork because things got heavy. The question shifts from how much to show to what that technique can do for the person wearing it. This time, the answer lived as much in the flexibility of the clothes as in their surface.

Leather came first. According to The Impression, Trotter had the skins shaved down to make them as light as possible. That single step captures much of the season’s direction. Bottega’s weight is still there. It was shaved off at the making stage.

Crochet is a good example. The yarn is thick and the flower motifs are big. There’s no attempt to hide the presence of craft. The stitches, instead, are left open. Even in a sweater that covers the whole body, skin and inner layers show through here and there, so the surface never hardens into one dense mass.

The set pointed the same way. Seats that looked like crushed cardboard boxes filled a wide white space, and on each imperfect white cube sat a single parrot tulip made entirely of leather. WWD tied the image to a collection that would be remembered for its handwork and its summer feeling. The seats were the work of artist Ilya Goldman-Gubin: lacquered cardboard that kept the creases left where the artist had hugged each one into shape.

That the flowers were leather made the collection read better. The house took the material it handles best and made something fragile and thin. The tulip announced the season, and it also worked as a small preview of how light leather could get this time.

The knots and folds on the runway worked the same way. Rather than laying fabric perfectly flat, Trotter gathered it to one side, folded it and twisted it into silhouette. That makes the clothes feel less precious and more touchable. The fact that something was made by hand becomes a reason to admire it and, at the same time, a signal that it’s fine to touch it and wear it.

Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 6
Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 6

Bottega didn’t get easier by using less craft. Its attitude toward craft got easier.

Set it beside Dolce & Gabbana from the same Milan week and the difference sharpens. At Dolce & Gabbana, crochet came layered with black lace, crosses and gold chains, deepening an image of Sicily. At Bottega, the first thing you notice is the open space between white stitches and the soft drape. The same handwork builds a memory of place in one house and, in the other, loosens the density of clothes to suit the season.

“Crochet is trending” doesn’t account for the distance between those two shows.

Silhouette | Long and Lean at the Start, Softening Into Volume

The early tailoring still sets the shoulders. Look 3’s navy double-breasted jacket holds the waist, and Look 5’s long coat runs vertically down the body. What sits beneath them loosens the mood: generous white trousers, white layers wrapped on the bias, soft hems falling close to the top of the foot. They take the edge off the upper body’s precision.

Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 3
Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 3

Vogue described the padded coat shoulders as slightly exaggerated, so these clothes didn’t get lighter because the structure vanished. The shoulder keeps its strength, and ease comes in through the body and the hem. The long, lean tailoring WWD singled out worked especially well over chinos and pink silk trousers. Shirt volume was held back too, so no look puffed up all at once.

“Long and lean” doesn’t quite cover it, though. Where the upper body is tidy, the lower half gets volume. Where the top is generous, a reference point stays at the waist or the cuff. That’s why Look 17’s pink top and yellow trousers land so well. Both halves are loose, but a thin belt at the waist clearly separates the two masses.

The knot is the device that shifts that balance. Lift one side of a long coat’s hem and you change, at once, how much leg shows and how long the garment reads. The coat also loses some of its formality the moment the hem is disturbed. It proves clothes can look lighter without losing much fabric at all.

Trotter compared it to someone about to wade into water. There’s a little nerve in hitching up and knotting the hem of an expensive coat. It suggests the shape needn’t be preserved to the very end, and that the wearer is allowed to handle it as the moment requires.

In the middle of the show, drape and fringe lead the movement. After that come cocoon skirts with their hems tucked under, sack dresses falling loosely beneath deep scoop necks, and full pleats. Rounded curves join the long verticals of the opening. The volume Trotter loves is still there, but where the density and bulk sit has changed.

Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 31
Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 31

Not every look was tuned well. Looks 31 and 33, falling wide beneath deep scoop necks, feel cool around the neck and face, but through the body it’s the sheer area of fabric you see first. A skirt like Look 34, with its hem gathered in hard, pulls the eye below the waist. In this stretch, the line between clothes that relax and clothes that overwhelm the body runs pretty close.

Look 50, on the other hand, solves the problem simply. It holds the shoulder and waist clearly and lets ease in only through the skirt. Where the dress supports the body and where it stands away from it are both obvious. It’s one of the looks I kept coming back to longest.

You can follow the progression from outerwear to spring color and then to summer’s white handwork. Pea coats and trenches return late in the show, but the overall direction is clear. Between the first coat and the last dress, the way clothes wrap the body changes. The tailoring that keeps coming back ties that seasonal journey to an everyday wardrobe.

Material | What’s Made Dense and What’s Left Open

With this season’s materials, it’s more interesting to look at density before type.

Shaved leather is the most direct starting point. Look 19’s taupe trench shows a wide folding front, gathers around the waist and fringe at the cuffs all at once. The presence of a leather coat stays, with movement added at the edges. The dark leather coats and pea coat that follow set their broad surfaces loosely around the body rather than locking them in place.

The white leather scarf wrapped around the waist in Look 2 is even more interesting. It’s a tightly woven intrecciato leather scarf, the kind of detail Vogue pointed to as proof of the atelier’s know-how. Rather than standing the leather up as its own object, like a bag or a coat, Trotter handles it like a piece of cloth tied casually at the waist. It looks casual before you even know how technically complex it is, and that says a lot about where this season was going.

Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 2

Crochet sits next to glossy outerwear and softly folded shirts. Lace with small repeating holes runs into bold flower motifs within the same white, and fine fringe hangs over a smooth ground. The colors are close, but each surface catches light differently, so the looks never go flat.

Looks 37 and 38 are worth seeing side by side. In 37, lace panels of different scales and sheer areas divide up the body’s outline. Right after, 38 uses a thick stitch and big florals. One is fine-lined and the other chunky, but both show what’s underneath through the gaps. They read light not just because they’re white, but because the surface was never sealed shut.

Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 37
Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 37

Intrecciato and the other weaves follow the same logic. With the weave on the bags enlarged, the eye follows the structure instead of a logo. Still, open weaving and crochet shouldn’t be lumped together as one technique. Material crossed over and under is a different structure from yarn linked in loops. Trotter makes those different structures resemble each other within a single look. Instead of copying one surface, the clothes and the bag share a rhythm of weave and open space.

Fringe pulls in yet another direction. Look 18’s lilac skirt drops long strands, yet its overall outline stays round. Rather than just fluttering at the hem, the fringe builds the skirt’s volume itself. In the late black looks, skeins of silk fringe cross and hang down the front of the body. Instead of filling the surface, that fringe leaves long, fine lines that make the black clothes feel longer and leaner.

I liked that the same detail built volume in one place and loosened it in another. A heavily worked surface wasn’t being used for just one effect.

Where these materials pile up, though, the eye gets a bit busy. Flowers, lace, fringe and weaving all have to be read at once. The breathing room this show needed wasn’t only the holes that let skin through. It also needed time spent on plain fabric with nothing on it.

Color | Pink and Red Among the Neutrals

Navy, beige and white come to mind first, but olive and burgundy do real work. Thanks to those two, the palette doesn’t split neatly into bright spring colors and dark basics. Brown outerwear with olive trousers, navy with burgundy: these pairings carry the familiarity of a city wardrobe.

Against that familiarity, the color in Looks 16 through 18 comes fully alive. A purple jacket with pink trousers, a pink top with butter yellow trousers, a cream shirt with a lilac skirt. Arriving one after another, the three looks feel like an extended color passage rather than a single accent.

Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 16

The best of them is Look 17. Pink and yellow alone could have turned quite sweet, but blue striped shirting shows at the neck and wrists. That small bit of blue cools everything down. The brown belt at the waist anchors the soft colors once more. Details like these are why the look goes beyond a pretty color combination, and why you can actually picture it worn.

Red plays a different part. It catches the eye on small bags and shoes and in Look 36’s flowers, then fills entire dresses in Looks 33 and 55. Compare the two and you see the same strong color change temperature with the silhouette. Look 33 shows red across a broad, smooth plane, while Look 55 breaks it up with shirring at the waist and asymmetric pleats. I found the second more convincing, because the movement of the fabric carries the saturated color.

Restraint with color is part of what made this collection elegant. Trotter knows how to use color, and she concentrated it only where it was needed, so each time it arrives, you notice. Whenever the color got strong, there was a shape to hold it.

Accessories | Pieces That Complete the Pose

Among the accessories, the small crochet cap catches the eye first. Its slightly peaked crown tidies the area around the face into something short and firm. Set on looks where fabric runs long below, that small form sharpens the difference in scale between top and bottom. Clothes and cap are both soft, open structures, and the cap is part of why the looks never unravel completely.

The bucket hat that covers much of the face does the opposite. It sets a rough surface and a blurred outline on top of the jacket’s squared shoulders, lowering the formality of the tailoring. File both the cap and the bucket hat under craft props and you miss that difference. One sharpens the outline; the other blurs it.

The bags were designed as much for where they’re carried as for their size. The long tote in the opening look drops from the shoulder along the body and extends the coat’s vertical line. The large white woven tote in Look 13 sets up a contrast of surface against plain navy. In Look 50, the dark woven bag and its burgundy strands gather beside an unembellished dress.

That arrangement is smart. If the dress in Look 50 had a busy surface too, the bag’s weave wouldn’t show nearly as well. The dress offers a smooth plane and the bag takes on the texture. Each reads better than it would if the same dose of craft had gone into both.

The flat shoes matter too. Put low shoes under a long dress and the way the garment carries its length changes. Instead of lifting the body on a heel to build the silhouette, they show the relationship between the fabric near the foot and the floor as it is. That lower eye line is part of why so much fabric never looks ceremonial.

The bags were among the show’s most immediately desirable pieces. They were also objects that complete the way a person stands in their clothes. On the runway, those two roles overlapped naturally.

The earrings carry the craft story on. Vogue pointed out the forms that looked sculpted from clay, the woven leather pieces, and the way they were often worn mismatched. What matters is that the hand-shaped form comes through before any sense of perfect symmetry. The slight looseness that started in the knots and folds of the clothes continued right up by the face.

5 Key Looks | Five Moments Where Lightness Made Its Case

Look 1 | Loosening the Coat’s Composure

Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 1,

Beige long coat, white layers, camel woven tote. List the colors and it’s an entirely familiar combination. What makes you look twice is the hem. The coat doesn’t fall evenly on both sides, so a different length opens up between the white inside and the coat outside.

Because the difference starts beneath squared shoulders, the looseness reads as intentional. I also like the white lace near the face. Craft shows up in a tiny area before it spreads across the body, and the broad beige plane of the coat is left alone. As an opening, it’s a confident choice.

Look 17 | Spring Starts With an Office Shirt

The pink top crosses the body on the diagonal, and a long panel wraps once around the neck. Blue striped collar and cuffs show underneath. Below, butter yellow pleated trousers; at the waist, a thin brown ring belt.

The shirt is what grounds the look. Instead of treating the pink sheen and drape as unfamiliar occasionwear, Trotter lays them over a garment we already know. Rolled cuffs that bare the wrists and hands tucked into pockets make the whole thing easy.

Vogue describes the top as lilac, worn over a blue-and-white-striped button-down and butter yellow chinos, and credits the combination with jolting the audience awake. To my eye it reads more pink, but either way, this is the show’s color turning point. A neat shirt with a layer from another season thrown over it.

I’d like to see more looks like this from Trotter. Material experiments and the wearer’s actual life share the same frame. You don’t need much explanation to see why it works.

Look 36 | Red Flowers on White Lace

Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 36,

Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 36,

Sheer white lace and panels of different textures, red flowers gathered in a vertical line down the center of the chest, white layers falling over one another below. On the head, a white crochet cap.

There’s plenty happening in this look. The closer you look, the more there is to read. From a distance, though, it resolves into a big mass of white and a narrow line of red flowers. Close-up complexity and long-view simplicity exist together.

Keeping the flowers gathered at the center rather than scattered was the right call. It tells the eye where to go first, so the surrounding lace and folds don’t compete. It shows how restraint is possible even in a heavily crafted garment.

Look 50 | The Dress That Stayed With Me Longest

dark navy one-shoulder long dress with crochet cap and woven leather bag
Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 50,

A dark one-shoulder dress. The bodice is shaped by seams, and the skirt widens below the waist and falls long. One hand in a pocket, the other holding a woven bag. A small cap and flat sandals finish it.

In this dress, you can see exactly where the ease is. The shoulder and waist tell you where the body is, and the fabric below lies free. It doesn’t constrict, and the person never disappears inside the dress.

I especially like the hand in the pocket. She doesn’t adopt the formal posture a one-shoulder gown might suggest. It’s evening elegance worn with an everyday gesture. Of everything in the show, this came closest to the Bottega I’d been hoping for.

Vogue also singled out the plain black one-shoulder long dress as a welcome counterweight, suggesting a few more looks like it would have balanced the show better. One of its most elegant moments came from its simplest garment.

That’s also why it left me a little wistful. With a few more dresses like this, the richly textured pieces would have read even more clearly. An unadorned look gives you room to notice how good the craft really is.

Look 55 | Pleats That Hold the Red

Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 55,
red cotton dress with ruched waist, side knot and asymmetric pleated skirt
Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 55,
red cotton dress with ruched waist, side knot and asymmetric pleated skirt

A vivid red cotton dress. The waist is ruched and tied at the side, and a full pleated skirt in the same shade falls asymmetrically below. The red runs all the way down to the shoes, but because the gathers above and the pleats below differ in scale, the color never hardens into one broad plane.

That difference is why it looks so much more alive than the red dress in Look 33. Rather than sending out a wide field of color, it splits it into small folds and long ones. The intensity stays, but the visual weight is spread out.

Gathering fabric on one side to shift the whole balance links back to the opening coat. There the hem was lifted; here the waist and skirt change direction. The idea repeats, but each garment gets a different result.

Also worth seeing: Look 2 with its leather scarf at the waist, Look 18’s lilac fringe skirt, and Looks 59 and 60 with silk fringe crossing down the front. They show, in turn, the pliability of leather, the volume of fringe and the movement of a fine line.

Body & Fit | If You Actually Wore These Easy-Looking Clothes

Taking this collection into daily life, the easiest place to start is Look 10’s navy jacket and chinos, or Look 14’s soft shirt and dark trousers. Both keep a reference point at the shoulder or waist and allow ease everywhere else. You don’t need every special accessory; the proportion holds on its own.

When borrowing from Look 17, watch the waist and wrists rather than matching the pink and yellow exactly. If the waistline disappears under a heavily draped top, the whole look can gain volume too quickly. Simply showing the belt or waistband and pushing up the sleeves a little recenters it.

Crochet changes a lot depending on what goes under it. A thin layer in a close tone brings the texture forward, while a contrasting color makes the holes and motifs pop. There’s no need to recreate the runway’s sheerness; you can choose which effect you’d rather see.

Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 34
Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 34

Round skirts and wide dresses, on the other hand, aren’t solved by sizing down. WWD noted that some models looked swamped by the sack dresses and satin pea coats. With looks like 31 and 33, where ease runs through the whole body, the fabric’s area registers first even with an open neckline. Look 34’s cocoon skirt gathers its bulk toward the bottom, so if the top is roomy too, balance gets hard to find.

What matters is whether there’s a point at the shoulder or waist that tells you where the body is, as there is in Look 50. For petite frames especially, it helps to weigh dress and skirt lengths together with where the drape begins. Look 17’s long neck panel covers less of the upper body if it’s arranged over one shoulder. Fringe grows wider in motion than at rest, so it’s worth considering hem length and shoes together.

The knotted coat also sets up a tension between price and attitude. Vogue pointed out that it’s an indulgence most women would hesitate over at Bottega prices, while finding appeal in Trotter’s insistence on treating precious clothes as everyday ones. I agree on both counts. Knotting the hem of a coat you actually own is one thing; embracing the ease that styling suggests is another. Pushing up the sleeves or wrapping the front asymmetrically can give a neat garment a similar release.

Industry Reception | The Shift Worked. What’s Left Is Calibration.

Across all three outlets, the verdict on the change is shared: Trotter loosened up, and the clothes were better for it. Where each one looked, though, differed a little.

WWD saw a collection that would be remembered for its handmade touches and natural summer feeling. It pointed to the long, lean tailoring and restrained shirt volume, and judged the menswear improved too, lighter and trimmer. The slightly undone quality Trotter described backstage fits that change. You can read the assessment clearly in combinations that keep the structure but relax the formality, like Look 10’s jacket and chinos or Look 16’s purple jacket and pink trousers.

Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 10
Bottega Veneta Spring 2027 Look 10

The Impression contrasted last season’s fiberglass dresses with this season’s turn toward nature, arguing that technical experiment can stay while its results show up more quietly. Shaving leather thin is a good example. Technique goes into making familiar clothes lighter to wear as much as into showing off unusual materials.

Vogue looked back at the heft of the previous two seasons and wrote that this time, she let the light in. It added that a few more looks like the plain one-shoulder dress would have improved the balance. The oversized volume WWD flagged in some dresses and pea coats shows what’s still left to do.

What I was more curious about was when that lightness works best.

The answer wasn’t only in the moments with fewer details. Look 36 carries a lot of handwork, but the order in which you take it in is clear, so it never feels complicated. Look 17 uses several colors and layers and still feels completely easy. A wide single-color dress, meanwhile, can have almost no decoration and still show its volume before the body.

The change I read in these reviews is in where the criticism lands. If the problem in earlier collections was the weight of craft and how it sat with the season, the question now is what to add and subtract within the lighter direction. What Trotter needs is to choose which garments get the volume she loves, and how far to push it. In looks where texture and folds already say a lot, other elements need to rest for a moment.

I think that distinction matters. Describe this collection’s achievement as simple minimalism and you erase what Trotter did well. Her clothes are still abundant and tactile. This season she showed, far more convincingly, how close that abundance can come to a person.

Brand Strategy | The Small Bag in the Final Look

The final look was the dark draped gown worn by Kendall Jenner. Fabric is gathered hard at one shoulder, with a long panel hanging below. The body is roomy, but the outline draws in toward the ankle. Close to the shoulder hangs a small leather bag.

The knot that began at the hem of the opening coat has climbed to the shoulder by the end. The position and the amount of fabric differ, but the method is the same: gather on one side and change the whole shape. It was the moment a show that put craft front and center also gained its widest visibility.

It’s too large a shape to call simply an unembellished dress. But with color and surface kept quiet, the focus goes to the knot at the shoulder and the diagonal folds. If Look 50 built its elegance along the body’s structure, the final look tries a different elegance by arranging fabric around the body.

As clothes, Look 50 still has more of my heart. As a closing image, though, I understand the choice of Look 62. The difference in scale between all that fabric and the small bag reads instantly, and the detail running from the shoulder gathers near the face.

That small bag is hard to miss. Without any explanation, the product sits inside the styling of the dress. It hangs from the drape as part of the garment, with no gesture toward the camera, so the runway idea and the product arrive together.

There’s a business context too. In its first-half 2026 results, Kering cited Bottega Veneta’s outperformance and accelerating momentum across regions, pointing to the contribution of leather goods. Romain Spitzer also took over as CEO on September 1.

Given that context, it means something that a leather bag appears in the closing look, the moment that draws the most attention. The link from the image the clothes create to an actual product sits within a single look. The timing also coincides with the first runway since the new CEO arrived, but that fact should be kept separate from the question of who made any individual styling decision.

None of this lets anyone claim that the casting or the closing bag was an executive directive. What can be read is how those elements come together in the final image. A highly recognizable model carries it, the dress continues the collection’s sculptural language, and the small bag earns its own place within it.

A house known for quiet luxury put one of the most recognizable models in the world in its closing slot. Did it give up its quiet, or show that quiet to a wider audience? I read it as the latter.

This closing didn’t suddenly produce a different kind of garment for a star. It kept the asymmetry, the gathered fabric and the low shoes that had run through the whole show, right to the end. The creative side builds the clothes’ credibility through craft and lightness; the casting widens the reach of that image. What matters is that the two roles didn’t collide within one look.

Final Assessment | Shaving Down Bottega’s Weight

Trotter didn’t throw out Bottega Veneta’s weight. She shaved it down.

The leather got thinner, and crochet and lace let air through their structure. Intrecciato came in not only as the surface of a bag but as a pliable leather scarf tied at the waist. The direction keeps the presence of handwork while lightening the load on the wearer. In her third season, the technique and the season met far more naturally.

White shows at an angle beneath a neat coat, and pink drape settles over a familiar striped shirt. An unadorned dress is paired with a bag whose weave stands out, and full skirts get low shoes. Taken one by one, each is a small decision. Together, those decisions made this season’s elegance.

There are disappointing looks, clearly. At moments, the area of a wide garment got ahead of the body, and I wanted a few more plain pieces among the complex surfaces. I’d especially like to see the confidence of Look 50 again next season: the confidence that you can make good clothes without laying the craft out for everyone to see.

Still, the feeling this show left me with was anticipation. Admiration for how well it was made came first, and then the thought that I’d like to wear it. At a house as strong in making as Bottega, that sequence following naturally matters more than you might expect.

The composure that came undone at the hem of the first look was tied back into a knot at the shoulder of the last. Lighter clothes, a small leather bag, and a closing that carried the image far.

Bottega seems to have found a way to make itself heard well beyond the runway, without raising its voice.
